Intro

I am a Turkish Canadian with an immigrant background. I am passionate about understanding and telling other immigrants' stories in Canada. Sometimes, these stories involve numbers, sometimes words, and sometimes silence. My research is empirical in nature, and aims to capture this complexity by collecting data on people.

The focus of my research is in the intersection of immigration, information and, the state. Just like every other thing in life, immigration is both social and political; both individual and collective; and both personal and governmental. Information shapes what we think, how we behave and more importantly, who we are. In a context of global migration where identities become more and more fluid, it is the information we receive that determines the way we make sense of a new society and we position ourselves within that society. This brings me to the final component: where to put the state between information and immigration, between technology and immigrant?

My research is about understanding this triangle of the three aspects of immigration: individual, governmental, and informational. To reflect this complexity, I study immigration by combining theories and methodologies from public administration and information science.

Research

My ongoing research projects:

Doctoral research project, ENAP

My doctoral research project focuses on the role and impact of information and misinformation on the motivation of temporary workers to migrate to Québec and their inclusion in the host society. My project has been awarded the SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarships (Joseph-Armand Bombardier).

A Comparative Study on Recent Regional Immigration Policies in Canada and Australia, ENAP

Recently, regionalization of immigration reappeared in the agenda of policy makers in Canada and Australia, two countries that rely on immigration for population growth. Although recent policies in the two countries share a common goal which is to achieve a better geographic distribution of newcomers, the process of agenda-setting in those countries did not follow the same pattern. The need for regional immigration policies was not problematized the same way in Canada and Australia. In Canada, population decline, and economic revival of the regions were used to define the problem whereas Australia followed a different pattern where policy makers emphasized the infrastructure problems in metropolitan areas. Using Narrative Policy Framework (NPF), this study compares the policy narratives emerged in both countries.

My past research projects:

Immigrec: Stories of Greek Immigration to Canada, McGill University

Immigrec explores the history and language of Greek immigrants in Canada and elucidates their connection to the social and cultural history of the country. It contributes to the study of Greek transatlantic immigration and to the understanding of ethnic diversity in Canadian society.

Processing of minority archives and curation of photo archives of Greek Canadians, Library and Archives Canada

During my internship at Library and Archives Canada, I processed archival fonds and curated a digital photo exhibit that can be visited here.

About

After I graduated from Bogazici University in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, I moved to Canada to study History and graduated with a Master of Arts degree in 2016. My interest for data and digital humanities sparked during my graduate studies and I decided to enrol in the Master of Information Science program at McGill's School of Information Studies where I studied both theoretical and practical aspects of information and data science. I am a PhD Candidate at École nationale d'administration publique and my doctoral project is supervised by Prof. Tatiana Garakani. I work as a Policy Analyst at the Government of Canada and as a Researcher at École nationale d'administration publique as part of the REGARDS research team. For information on my projects, check out my research.
